Testing the Dyson V15 Detect: The Smartest Vacuum Yet?

Smart home technology has made its way into everything from fridges to doorbells, but now, your vacuum cleaner might just be the smartest appliance in the room. Enter the Dyson V15 Detect, a cordless vacuum that doesn’t just clean, it analyzes, adapts, and even counts the microscopic dust it collects.

We put the V15 through a week of hands-on testing across multiple floor types, room sizes, and daily mess scenarios. Is it really as smart and powerful as Dyson claims or just another high-priced gadget in disguise?

The standout feature of the Dyson V15 Detect is its laser dust detection system. Yes, laser. On the front of the slim Fluffy cleaning head, a green diode casts a wide beam across your floor, revealing dust, dander, and fine particles you’d never see with the naked eye. It’s not just a gimmick, it’s oddly satisfying and highly functional. In dim lighting, especially on hard surfaces like tile or wood, you’ll be amazed at what shows up.

The V15’s brains are just as impressive. Inside the unit is a piezo sensor that detects the size and quantity of dust particles being sucked in. The LCD screen on the handle then displays a real-time chart of what's being picked up and categorized by size range. It doesn’t just clean, it informs.

Underneath the flashy features is Dyson’s Hyperdymium motor, spinning at up to 125,000 RPM. That power translates into some of the strongest suction we’ve experienced from a cordless vacuum. In Boost mode, the V15 delivers an intense 230AW (air watts), tackling ground-in dirt in carpets, corners, and crevices with ease.

Dyson’s automatic mode is where things get interesting. It adjusts suction dynamically based on floor type and particle detection, ramping up power when needed, then dialing it back to conserve battery. On hardwood, it glides effortlessly; on rugs and thick pile carpets, it digs deep without requiring manual intervention.

Battery life varies by mode, but we consistently got up to 60 minutes on Eco and around 15–20 minutes on Boost. The swappable battery design is a win for users with larger homes, as you can buy a second battery to double your runtime.

The included attachments are generous: Torque Drive head, Laser Slim Fluffy head, crevice tool, combination tool, and a high-reach adapter for above-floor dusting. The anti-tangle hair screw tool is especially useful for pet owners, it easily picks up long strands without wrapping around the brush bar.

Weight distribution is front-heavy, like all Dyson stick vacuums, but the ergonomic trigger and redesigned grip make it easier to maneuver, especially for overhead cleaning or stairs.

The Final Verdict

The Dyson V15 Detect isn’t just a powerful cordless vacuum, it’s a smart, data-driven cleaning system that changes how you think about home hygiene. The laser detection and dust tracking features are not just novelties, they’re functional tools that encourage more intentional cleaning.

At a premium price point, it won’t be for everyone. But for those who want the most advanced, intelligent vacuum experience available today, the V15 Detect delivers.
